Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek hypnotherapy. Whether it's constant worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, or a generalised feeling that something is wrong — these feelings are exhausting. The good news is that the brain can change. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective approaches to make that happen.
Why does anxiety respond so well to hypnotherapy?
Anxiety is essentially the brain's threat-detection system working overtime. The amygdala — the part of the brain responsible for the fight-or-flight response — gets stuck in "red alert", releasing stress hormones and making you feel on edge even when you're perfectly safe.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works directly with this system. The talking part of each session helps your brain shift focus from problems to solutions, which gradually calms the amygdala. The hypnosis part uses deep relaxation to lower cortisol levels and encourage the brain to build new, healthier neural pathways. Over time, your baseline anxiety level drops — and the triggers that used to set you off begin to lose their power.
What does a session for anxiety look like?
Your first appointment at First Step Therapy — based near Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire — is a free initial consultation. This isn't a therapy session; it's a friendly conversation. Vikki will explain how SFH works, answer your questions, and help you decide if it feels like the right fit. There's no pressure and no commitment required.
From your first proper session onwards, each appointment follows a similar structure. You'll have a positive, forward-focused conversation about how things have been — what's felt a little better, what small wins you've noticed. Then you'll move into the hypnosis part: a deeply relaxing guided experience that allows your subconscious mind to absorb positive suggestions and reinforce a calmer, more confident way of thinking.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Most clients with anxiety notice some improvement within the first two or three sessions. This doesn't mean the anxiety vanishes overnight — but you may find yourself responding differently to situations that previously triggered you, sleeping a little better, or simply feeling less "on edge" day to day.
A full course of treatment for anxiety typically takes between 6 and 10 sessions. Some clients find fewer sessions are enough; those dealing with more complex or long-standing anxiety may prefer a longer course. Vikki will always work at a pace that suits you.
