OCD & Intrusive Thoughts
If your mind won't leave you alone, you're not broken — your brain's threat system is stuck on. Gentle, forward-focused hypnotherapy can help quiet it down.
You are not your thoughts
Living with OCD or intrusive thoughts is exhausting in a way that's very hard to explain to people who haven't experienced it. The thoughts themselves are distressing. The effort to manage or suppress them is constant. And the shame — the sense that the content of your thoughts says something about who you are — can make it feel impossible to talk about.
Vikki has personal experience of OCD. You won't need to explain yourself here. You won't be judged — only heard, and helped to find a way forward.

The approach
The more you fight an intrusive thought, the more mental energy you give it. SFH takes a different approach: rather than confronting or suppressing the content of thoughts, we work to reduce the underlying anxiety that makes them feel so urgent and threatening in the first place.
When the brain's threat-detection system calms down, thoughts that felt unbearable become easier to notice without reacting to. Compulsive behaviours lose some of their urgency. The mental volume drops. This doesn't happen overnight — but it does happen.
A note on severe OCD
For severe OCD, specialist treatment (such as ERP therapy) may be the most appropriate first step, and we would encourage you to speak with your GP. SFH works well as a complement to other treatments — and for many people with milder or moderate presentations, it is effective as a standalone approach.
"I came to this work partly because of my own experience with OCD. I know the particular torture of a thought you can't escape. I also know that things can get better — genuinely better, not just managed. That's what I work toward with every client."
— Vikki, First Step Therapy
Understanding the pattern
OCD is not a character flaw, a sign of weakness, or — despite how it can feel — evidence that you want to do the things your thoughts describe. It is a misfiring of the brain's threat-detection system: the amygdala becomes hypersensitive, generates alarming thoughts, and then reads your distress at those thoughts as confirmation that they matter. The compulsion follows — checking, washing, repeating, reassuring — and provides temporary relief. But relief teaches the brain that the threat was real, which makes the next intrusive thought even louder.
This is the OCD cycle: obsession → anxiety → compulsion → temporary relief → stronger obsession. Understanding this cycle doesn't break it, but it does explain why willpower alone doesn't work, and why approaches that engage directly with the content of the thoughts often make things worse rather than better.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works differently. Rather than confronting the thoughts, we focus on gradually lowering the brain's overall anxiety baseline. When the threat-detection system is less reactive, intrusive thoughts generate less distress — and with less distress, the urgency to perform compulsions reduces. The cycle begins to lose its momentum.
In the talking part of each session, we focus entirely on what a calmer, freer version of your life looks like — small steps forward, moments where things were slightly better, what you want to move toward. In the hypnosis, deep relaxation allows positive change to settle at a level below conscious thought. Over a course of sessions, the pattern shifts.
Vikki has personal experience of OCD. She has been through the cycle herself, knows the particular shame and exhaustion of it, and brings that understanding to every session — not as a badge, but because it means you don't have to explain yourself from scratch.
